Saracens face a nervous wait over the fitness of Maro Itoje after the England lock was taken to hospital Sunday with a facial injury.

Itoje was forced off in the 48th minute of his side’s 20-19 defeat to Harlequins with blood pouring from a cut to his mouth.

He has undergone scans on the injury and Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall expects to know more about its extent on Monday.

“Maro has gone to hospital with a facial injury so we’ll get an update in the next 24 hours,” he said.

The Champions Cup holders host Clermont in the competition Sunday as they continue their quest for a third successive title.

Saracens then go to France seven days later and McCall will be keen to have his star second row available for such a vital double header.
